Larimar: History & Origin

“Larimar is the only gemstone found exclusively in the Dominican Republic—nature’s tropical masterpiece.”

Larimar was discovered in 1974 along the Bahoruco coast of the Dominican Republic. Its colors range from light sky blue to deep volcanic blue, often streaked with white. This rare variety of pectolite is mined by hand in steep, remote hills.

Larimar: Heritage, Qualities & Market Value

Larimar’s value is driven by vivid blue color, clarity, and unique patterns. Only a small fraction of rough yields top-grade cabochons. It is commonly cut as freeforms, beads, and ovals for designer jewelry. Supplies are limited, adding to its allure and investment value.

  • Hardness: 4.5–5 on the Mohs scale (careful handling required).
  • Color: Deeper blue stones are most prized.
  • Cut: Often cut en cabochon to show scenic patterns.
  • Market: Top-grade stones are rare and rising in price.
  • Imitations: Real larimar only comes from the Dominican Republic.
